AM Steppers Academy — internal tool

Beat logger

Tap along with a video to capture the exact second each count lands, then export it straight into the site's beat-count overlay format.

This tool follows Steppin's real count structure, not an evenly spaced 8-count.

The dance count doesn't line up 1-to-1 with the music. Dance-count "1" actually lands on musical beat 2 of the first measure — Steppin' is built on that 2-and-4 backbeat feel, not the downbeat. Every one of the 8 counts is a real weight-shift step (there are no "hold" counts among 1–8), but the phrase moves in a 3-3-2 grouping with two built-in pauses: 1, 2, 3 — pause — 4, 5, 6 — pause — 7, 8.

Counts 1, 4, and 7 land exactly on the music's backbeat — beat 2 of measure 1, beat 4 of measure 1, and beat 2 of measure 2. That's a rhythmic fact about the music. But the true anchor steps are a separate, technical thing: 3, 6, and 8 — the step where your weight fully settles right before each pause (or before the phrase repeats, at 8). Anchors are marked gold below; beat-lock counts get a thin gold underline so both facts stay visible without being confused for each other.

In follow footwork, count 1 starts on the left foot. This tool tracks foot alternation per tap so the exported data captures which foot lands on every count, not just when.

Number keys 1–8 work too, so you can keep your eyes on the video instead of the screen. Space toggles play/pause. Just keep tapping straight through — the tool automatically starts a new phrase every time you loop back to count 1, so you never need to stop and click anything between cycles.

3. Review and fine-tune

Tap timing always has a little human reaction lag — nudge any row's time if it's off, or delete a bad tap and redo it.
